SPECIALIZED UNITS
Houston County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team
Special Response Team (SRT)
The Special Response Team is composed of deputies drawn from various units throughout the HCSO. Team members are equipped with advanced weapons systems, communications systems, and specialized equipment, which enable the team to resolve a variety of tactical situations. Scenarios in which the SRT is deployed include hostage situations, incidents involving barricaded offenders, and the execution of high-risk warrants. Team members train regularly. They must maintain a high level of physical fitness. The team deploys with its own canine, medics, and crisis negotiators.
Reserve Deputy Unit
Members of the Reserve Unit assist the Sheriff’s Office in many ways, including patrol operations and court security. All new reserve deputies must be certified as law enforcement officers by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. Uncertified applicants are required to obtain APOST certification before active membership status is granted. New reserve deputies must meet the same training requirements as other deputies, including the requirement to complete a field training period under the supervision of a field training officer. Reserve deputies also undergo annual training. Reserve deputies are fully equipped and have the authority to make arrests and execute warrants.
